UNSC condemns attack against Iraq PM and calls for accountability

UNITED NATIONS – The UN Security Council has reacted to the attempt to assassinate the Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and called for the perpetrators of the attack to be brought to justice.

The 15 council members condemned the attack on Saturday in a press release.

It stated that the Security Council members had stressed the need to bring perpetrators, organizers financiers and sponsors of terrorist acts to justice.

It urged all countries to “cooperate actively with the government and all other relevant authorities”

It stated that the members of Security Council reaffirmed their conviction that terrorist acts are illegal and inexcusable.

Officials said that Kadhemi was not injured in the attack by three drones. Two of them were intercepted. However, two bodyguards were hurt.

Two days earlier, security forces clashed against supporters of Iran-backed parties, which lost support in recent elections. However, Assaib Ahl Al-Haq’s head, one of the most pro-Iran groups, demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice.
